NASHVILLE SHORTLINES and MUSEUMS

Welcome to the Homepage of TC Shortlines

The former Tennessee Central Railway line in the Nashville area hosts the Nashville & Eastern, Nashville & Western, Music City Star and the Tennessee Central Railway Museum.

Nashville & Eastern

I began photographing the Nashville and Eastern in 2003. Here is a photographic roster and notes about each locomotive.

Nashville & Western

Nashville & Western 3901, a GE U23B, is the first unit to wear the NWR paint scheme. NWR 3901 was originally delivered to the Southern Railway as 3901R with a high short hood. SOU 3901 became NS 3901 after the merger. The NERR's Lebanon shop has done an outstanding job with the chop nose and paint scheme.
Nashville & Western 3927, a GE U23B, still wears her NS stripes and paint. NWR 3927 was originally delivered with a high short hood to the Southern Railway as 3927F. SOU 3927 became NS 3827 after the merger. The NERR's Lebanon shop has done an excellent job converting this unit to a low short hood.

Music City Star

Former Amtrak 332 will be repainted and renumbered MCS 120. MCS 120 is an EMD F40PH passenger locomotive. This unit will be the backup locomotive for the new Nashville Commuter Rail that will begin service in early 2006.
This was repainted and renumbered MCS 121 in September, 2005. The former Amtrak 398 is an EMD F40PH passenger locomotive. This will be one of the 2 primary units for the new Nashville Commuter Rail operation, The Music City Star.
MCS 121, now wearing the new Music City Star scheme, is the former Amtrak 398. This is one of the 2 primary units for the new Nashville Commuter Rail operation, The Music City Star.
Former Amtrak 399 is seen here, in early October, 2005. The unit is being prepped for painting and renumbering. 399 will become MCS 122 and will serve as one of the 2 primary units for the new Nashville Commuter Rail operation, The Music City Star.

Tennessee Central Railway Museum

Tennessee Central Railway Museum's 52, an EMD SW8, is former US Army 2038.
One of TCRM's ex-Amtrak EMD F40PH passenger locomotives, the 258 suffered an engineroom fire and is now a parts unit for the 375.
TCRX 715, an EMD F7A, is ex-Bessemer & Lake Erie 715. TCRM's plans are to rebuild this unit into part of an L&N A-B-B-A set.
A work in progress, Tennessee Central Railway Museum 719, an EMD F7A, is ex-Bessemer & Lake Erie 719. This covered wagon is undergoing restoration to become part of an L&N A-B-B-A set.

The old TC has been removed from Cookeville to Crossville. Just west of Crossville, in the city of Crab Orchard, Franklin Minerals still operates a portion of the former TC line to a connection with Norfolk Southern in Rockwood.

NC&StL 576 in Centennial Park

Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis #576, an ALCo 4-8-4 steam engine, was built in August 1942 by the Schenectady Works, builder # 69786. Actually donated by the NC&StL for perpetual display at Centennial Park in Nashville, TN. This J3 Dixie class engine was moved into position September 13th, 1953. This is the only known surviving mainline NC&StL steam locomotive. Efforts are underway to retrieve, restore and run this engine.

Nashville's Union Station

Nashville's Union Station, now a Wyndham Hotel, first opened in 1900. The station was restored in 1998.

Tennessee Valley Authority in Gallatin, just outside Nashville

Stored serviceable in 1997, TVA F3060 was built in October 1958 and has been assigned to TVA's Gallatin Fossil Fuel Plant since delivery. This Fairbanks Morse H-16-66, or Baby Trainmaster, is one of only 3 known to still exist. Photo taken with permission.
