Chattanooga is a city rich in railroad history. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, an operating museum, has something for everyone. You'll also find the Chattanooga Choo Choo, the National Model Railroad Association Headquarters and A. C. Kalmbach Memorial Library, and several area shortlines.


Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is an operating railroad that offers local trips and day-long excursions several times each year.

Area Shortlines

The Chattooga and Chickamauga Railway, a CAGY subsidiary, operates two lines in the Chattanooga area. One line operates from a connection with NS in the St. Elmo area south to Kensington, GA on former TAG trackage. The other, and probably better known line is the former CofG line from a connection with NS just off Rossville Blvd in Chattanooga south to Summerville, GA. The CofG line is also used by TVRM for excursion trains run several times each year.
Located in South Pittsburg, the Sequatchie Valley Railroad runs from just north of South Pittsburg, TN to a connection with the CSX at Bridgeport, AL.

Railroad Monuments

Standing beside the CSX W&A sub, MP 116.3 is the GENERAL Marker. The inscription begins...This tablet marks the spot at which the Locomotive General was abandoned by Andrews' Raiders Afternoon of April 12th, 1862. The bottom of the tablet states it was produced by the Foundry of NC&StL Ry June 1901.
A monument to Andrews' Raiders, of the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase fame, stands at Chattanooga's National Cemetery.

Railroad Displays

Now a park display in Collegedale, a bedroom community just outside Chattanooga, this Whitcomb/BLH RS-4-TC locomotive last served at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Virginia.
Also in the Collegedale Park is a former N&W caboose, a boxcar, and a flatcar turned performance stage.
